Hi John,
It will be my honor
to meet with you and I look forward to it. As a matter of fact, I did
attend a Guyana fund raising show in Orlando in which you participated.
I attended the show with my cousin, Salim Baksh of Port Charlotte,
Florida, who met you privately after your performance. Unfortunately, at
the time you suffered an injury during your performance and were in some
discomfort, but you were still kind and gracious to meet with him. He
was thrilled to meet you. My cousin has an obsession for soca music and
he certainly is an ardent fan of yours.
I must confess I
respect you as a man blessed with many great talents and you have
obviously shared some of them in your songs and your performances. The
recognition and awards you have received are well-deserved. You are very
good at what you do!
However, beyond the
accolades of the stage, I perceive you as a sincere people person ...
one who divests himself of superficial airs that invariably go with fame
and fortune ... you certainly appear to enjoy the humble company of the
ordinary man. Also, I'm truly impressed with your altruistic and active
involvement in benevolent and cultural affairs ... sharing your talents
with those in need and contributing to the betterment of society. In
other words, I see you as an affable and caring individual who is trying
to make a change for a better society and, hopefully, a better world.
You have displayed such qualities of a true ambassador. Needless to say
I'm a fan! […]
John, take care and
have a great trip.

Dear Slingshot,
I cannot tell you how great it was to make your acquaintance "face to
face". I hope that this is the first of many more conversations to
come. In the span of just a couple of minutes, I know why you won this
coveted award. You are a one in a million person, a person who is so
easy to talk to, (I am still laughing about the corn!, and will continue
to smile each time I think of it) a man of conviction, a very passionate
man, one who truly lives what he believes, one who does not stand on
pretense, a true inspiration through his chosen work. I can only say
that one day I would hope that we are able to truly meet face to face,
for I would love to shake your hand!
Thank you for making my day!!

Hi John,
Yes Sir... Sure wish I could go back in time... I would do a lot of
stuff a lot different.....
Sometimes I get on the phone with my friends and reflect on "The way we
were"
what a wonderful time!!!!!!!!! UNIQUE AND VERY SPECIAL!
I recall you in
your white jeans (slicker than oil) roaming through Skeldon with your
gang..... We were kinda afraid yet challenged by your TV-like
demeanor... Don't forget you were way ahead of the times. It was not in
context to think of #63 as having its own STRING BAND.... Our thinking,
very biased of course, was that of "ONLY IN SKELDON"... We were the town
dudes...... (small minds)
I'm sure that your "YOUNGER JOHNNY DAYS" in #63 were spent doing the
things that mattered the most.... Pat's brother, Bucksha, would always
comment on your mixing up with them. You didn’t have to. Respecting
and even teaching them some tricks of the trade! He stated that it felt
great and that it made him proud and happy that that you were a friend
to the "underdogs". In spite of your family situation, you, a little
talented coolie boy from the sandy beaches of #63 singing "I DID IT MY
WAY"..!
I do hope that you have someone in training....passing on the torch
(hand lamp) so to speak, to whom you are imparting that spirit of
excellence/...that #63 spirit.
Sure is a privilege and a joy to have bumped into you......
Stay connected

Where to start?
Where to start? (Muttering to self.)
How are you, my friend? Sorry about the long delay but finally all the
sheep (kids) are back in the fold and I now have some time for myself.
First, we simply have to get together! So many surprises and tons of
questions on my part that would probably keep me writing for the next
three days! I was completely (pleasantly) blindsided by the very first
CD I put on. I kept thinking to myself - "Is this John? This can't be
John!"
Man, this is some
kind of change from the days of the Lonely Bulls! I mean,
how did you get from there to here, musically speaking? We have to have
a sit-down! I'm just dying to learn about the journey.
Now I say this in all honesty - no feigned modesty here. Slingshot, you
are, musically speaking, light years ahead of me. You might find it hard
to picture it, but I have not touched (literally) a musical instrument
since 1965! So I have been out of the musical loop for about 40 yrs.
And my exposure to Soca has been limited to my frequent visits to the
local "Roti Shops".
Taking it as is
though, this stuff is, without a doubt, TOP SHELF!! John, you have
definitely found your niche. Composer, performer, "Soca Monarch"! I
mean, how does one compose? I never got around to that! You know what?
This is just not going to work. Can you give me a good day/time (before
8 p.m.) to call? I'm just bursting with questions.
Until then, my friend!
Rudi.
P.S. Thanks a million for the CD's.

Hi John:
It was delightfully refreshing, as always, speaking with you. And the
joy was multiplied when I spoke with Ingrid. Then in the mail today, I
received one of the nicest surprises that I could ever have hoped for --
cassava pone. It has been so long since I tasted one of those delicacies
that I sat down and demolished three of them in record time!!
I really appreciate the time and effort you and Ingrid took to send me
such a fantastic gift. It really made the holidays worth it. Now I'll
just have to make it a point to see you in Orlando, Georgetown, London,
Toronto or anywhere else so that we could enjoy a few hours of your
company.
Then there is the CD [Mash Fever]. I think "y'all" did a wonderful job
on it. The tunes are beautiful and the lyrics very meaningful. Such
talent!!?
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! […]
Please give my regards to Ingrid and tell her that I have to go to
Guyana or Trinidad to find someone who could make cassava pone as
delicious as she did :-) !!
Let us keep in touch, John. Perhaps our paths would cross soon.
