March 09, 2006 9:39 AM Yes, John, there are quite a number of us in the country who still remember you and “Lonely Bulls”. You all were great musicians and entertainers. John, you were the first local at that time to have long hair! And a Berbician at that!!! Man, those were the days!! I used to sit at Penguin’s bar and watch you on that dark-brown Supro rhythm guitar, Rudy on his red Futurama lead guitar, Tony Mack on his Premier drum set, Shamboy on that locally made red bass guitar, perform all those wonderful Shadows and Los Indios instrumentals. You country boys were excellent!! Rudy was really good on the lead never missing a note while you held down the rhythm with fantastic strumming, as Tony kept the band tight with his drumming. I would admire the huge bull skull with red bulbs in the eye sockets. That was a touch of creativity on you guys part. I even had the courage at one time to sing with you all. That was at a dance at Town Hall. Remember? There was saxophone player with you all that night. Boy did I make myself a total jackass!! You and I should get together, when you come to Berbice again, and talk about those wonderful days. You should know by now I have a good memory. Here is my address and phone number […] John, keep up the good works and continue to make Guyana, and especially Berbice, proud of her native son! You have certainly come a long way from those “Lonely Bulls” days, my friend! Congratulations again on your successes! Ron
[The following is my reply to such a dear fan: someone who has certainly opened up a floodgate and brought back such a deluge of wonderful memories from/of my teenage days -- Slingshot]
Dear friend Ronny, Oh my gosh…!!! You won’t even start to ever understand what you have done by sending me that email…!! I have re-read it so many, many times with each reading bringing even more memories…! At one point my eyes were wet with joyful tears, as I reflected on those teenage days, which you have so wonderfully brought back in color and descriptions. I’m presently lost for words as to where to begin. However, I just want to tell you how much I appreciate all you have written. You brought back some treasured memories of my teenage days with my group “Lonely Bulls”. You have touched me with your detailed description of our equipment. Even I have forgotten some of the details you have so carefully stored in your heart and memory. I thank you, Ron I am certainly going to keep your phone number and address safely, as I want very much to ferret out any and everything you can remember about me and the other guys. If you remember anything more about “Lonely Bulls”, Penguin, and other places we once played, write them down. Try hard to remember anything on the patrons and fans frequenting La Bennett’s Penguin during those periods. Store safely such info. Or send it to me through emails and attachments, etc. Do visit my website and check the old photos there on “Lonely Bulls” days. Thank you for such a reawakening of memories. My book “Slingshot: From No. 63 Beach to Madison Square Garden” is still in manuscript form. With your brief description of “Lonely Bulls” in mind, I have to include your input. Stay in touch! Best regards … Slingshot (407) 859-8726
