Slingshot…
Saw your performance at Orlando Carnival fete Saturday night at Citrus Bowl.
Great show! Love your showmanship and the way you worked the crowd.
I felt proud being a Guyanese among those Trinidadians when you waved the Golden Arrowhead high and proud. Good show!
I am looking forward to seeing you at the Guyana Concert in Tampa on May 1, and Orlando Carnival on Memorial Weekend.
Slingshot, we Guyanese here in Florida are very proud of you!

David

Hello Slingshot!
I just want you to know how much my friends and I enjoyed your performance at the Orlando Carnival Association pre-carnival fete on Saturday March 5, at the Citrus Bowl.
Boy, you really put on a show on that stage, you know!
When you waved that Trinidad Flag, we went crazy clapping. And when you pulled out that Guyana Flag, if you see how your Guyanese people at the other side tables near us carried on! We joined in too! Boy, you are something else.
What I like very much is how you came up to our table and place that bead around my neck. My friends just went jealous when you put your hands around me as you sang the “Pussy Cat” song.
You wicked, you know!
We all were touched very much when you sing that song “Golden Locket”. Is it a really true story?
I just want you to know, too, that we clapped very loudly when Julia presented you that trophy.
Will you be performing at Orlando’s carnival in May? Please let me know. My friends and I will be supporting you in the crowd.
I will be looking out for your reply.
And Slingshot, thank you for your business card, and for making me feel so special when you sang to me Saturday night.
Your forever Trini fan, Vern.

Slingshot:

Sorry it has taken me two weeks to pen this thank you for your provision of appropriate, soothing and nostalgic dinner music at our 35th Republic Anniversary Ball at the Church Street Ball Room, February 19.

The feedback I have gotten from the more than 350 people that attended has been nothing but positive and your contribution helped make the night the total success it was.

Both Ted Braithwaite (To Sir, With Love) and Ambassador & Mrs. Karran were disappointed you could not sing that night. You should have taken my advice and had two or three shots of high wine the previous night and your throat would have been perfect.

Next time your throat bothers you try a good old shot of Harry Wills.

Again thank you and I look forward to working with you in the future.

Barbados Concert for Guyana under patronage of Prime Minister Arthur
Saturday, March 5th 2005

Dear Editor,

Frank Da Silva has announced that The Concert for Guyana-Barbados will be held on Sunday, March 12, 2005 at the Frank Collymore Hall from 8:00 p.m. The concert will be held under the patronage of Barbados's Prime Minister, The Right Honorable Owen Seymour Arthur.
[…]

When the story of the music and Guyana's 2005 flood is written we will have to give a special place to John "Slingshot" DrePaul's "You're Not Alone."

That song, composed by John and Ingrid Drepaul, was recorded before the floods.

Actually, the song which features many of Guyana's leading singers was created to express solidarity with HIV/AIDS victims in Guyana.

The song has a particular transcendental quality. The lyrics express a solidarity that has resonance across all the challenges facing Guyanese at the moment.

To hear this song, please visit The Concerts for Guyana web site (http://concertsforguyana.ohiou.edu) and click on "Listen to Music Now!" "You're Not Alone" is the first selection.

[…]

Yours faithfully,

I do recall you living (along with Mac ??) at the 63 Beach Road. I have also listened to you play at the Estate Junior Staff club - am I correct that one of those tunes was "Perfidia" and also 'Lonely Bull".

Last weekend I met a few folks from 63-64 villages that you may know. Fazie Haniff (Afzal's sister) and Kwajha Ajib (used to live last house on the 63 old road, going to 62 village)
Anyhow, welcome to the group. So far I have enjoyed your contribution.

Hi John,

Sorry for not writing earlier.

I received your package a couple of weeks ago, and viewed/listened to the two DVDs with the family. We enjoyed the songs immensely. Even my little girl had fun. Overall, the compositions were excellent. There are a few areas, from my naive perspective, that may need some brushing up (nothing to do with the lyrics but more with the imagery). However, I want to view/listen to the CDs once again before I suggest anything. Hopefully, I can create some time this weekend to do this.
Again, sorry for the late response, and thanks for the CDs. Say hi to Ingrid (Island Girl?:-)) and the kid (of the a,b,c,d, ... fame).
Best wishes
Parb.

comments: Hi John, Great website!
You were a teacher at Tagore Memorial High School in the Corentyne, an entertainer in Berbice, and later the Head of the Presidential Guards for our former president Dr. Cheddi Jagan. [These] are great achievements.
Having the early experiences of being the leader of "Sons of India" in the 60s, a musical band that played through out Guyana, John DrePaul is a name that would be long remembered throughout Berbice, especially Corentyne, as "our own".
You are a man, who I personally know, lived on your own, grew up without parents from an early age, and has now grown to make headlines in your entertaining field. These are some things to which we Guyanese should aspire.
John, you are still the leader, not only for "Sons of India", but for the rest of us in Berbice, and Guyana.
I am very proud of you being from my Village: No. 63 Village.
Keep up the good work!

Hello Y'all!
I do know John Drepaul. We were friends for sometime. He taught at Tagore Memorial High, # 63 Village, the same time with Pundit Ramlall, "Palo" Ramdhan etc. while I taught at SLPGSS. John possessed musical talent as a singer and player of various instruments. He, teacher Macintosh and others formed a Band called "Lonely Bulls". Many times my Skeldon friends and I hired the Band for our parties for they were great.

I am in possession of two of John's albums: "Home Sweet Home" (dedicated to his late wife […]) and "Jump For Carnival". John 'Slingshot' Drepaul as he is also known resides in Orlando and entertains at Clubs, Weddings, Parties and Festivals. He also goes to Guyana and Trinidad and partake in Musical Festivals.
We should we proud of John and support him and unsure we have some of his CDs in our Musical Collection.
It is true that he was a Security Personnel with Dr. J's Bodyguards.
All the best to you Slingshot!

Hi John,
[…] I visited your website today and found it most interesting. […] I had fun reading all the stuff other people wrote. You seem to be a very popular man and I am not the only one that likes your music. […] It would be nice having you in Guyana sometime soon since I think your music is very compelling and soothing.

It’s nice to see someone who is so dedicated and love their country so much. […] I like your music because it’s original. It has a sense of being Guyanese and a proud one at that. U capture the beauty of the things once forgotten. U see most people tend to forget where they come from and what they represent. You highlight our diversity and culture in your music and make people appreciate the little and simple things in life.

For example how nice it can be living in the country side where there are trenches and black water and mud etc. Not a lot of people like to admit that they were once part of those things. Most people are ashamed to say they once cooked on fireside or bath in a river - u know … something like that. Your songs are very melodious and inspiring especially for those who have heard about Guyana but never visited.

[…] Thanks for reminding me of the road march - I am certainly looking forward to that and will await your further advice. It sounds very fun and interesting and unlike anything I have ever seen at Mash in Guyana. Anyways have a nice evening.

With kind regards,
Shabana.

Hi John

I got the package this morning […] I love the videos! […] Guyanese starved for images of home would love the imagery and the messages that you bring through your songs.

The “Pirates” video was very good too ... and dead serious. That came across in the video and I hope that the powers that be see and appreciate the gravity of the situation, and that in spite of it being music and fun and art and all that good stuff, it is still the livelihood of the person doing it. As such it needs to be protected just as much as if it were a more tangible product whose producer would enjoy the benefits of the legal system when it comes to theft of property. A lot has to be done regarding piracy in Guyana, starting with the radio stations and other media.

The other video on the “Pirates” CD, “Dr. Slingshot”, is a bit risqué but still fun. […]

Congratulations to both you and Ingrid for such great music and wonderful lyrics, which always hit the nail right on the head when it comes to putting aside that which separates, and embracing that which brings us together, be it political or otherwise.

Wayne

Mr. Slingshot!

My name is Seeta, and I am a Guyanese writing you from Trinidad. I am staying with my aunt in Princess Town. You are loved in our home on East Bank Demerara. That is where I am from. My mom loves your videos. She gets all stupidy when she sees you on TV. I say this because she dare me that I cannot say it to you. Her favorite video is “El Dorado Dream”. Anyway, I want you to know that my aunt here in Trinidad says she knows you. She said she was your pen-pal when you was a soldier. I told her she lying. How can she know you, when she is here in Trinidad? I have to go now. But you keep singing those nice songs for all of us. Bye
Seeta

Dear Slingshot
This is a surprise to you from me. I met you at your Mashramani band launching at Pegasus November last year. I had asked you to take a photo with me. Do you remember? I want you to know you did a very good job and we all Guyanese are proud of you. We are having some difficult times presently with plenty floods. It would be good if you can come and help us with your presence and music. You might not know this, but you have a lot of admirers who believe in you.
Thank you for your time.
Leila

Hi Slingshot!
I heard that song you and our local singers did when you were here in Guyana. It is so well put out. You and Michelle King voice blend nice. Thank you for the efforts you have made to highlight the plight of our people. We have some floods going on now. But when next you visit, please send me a mail at […] I have a few ideas for your road march band.
Keep up the good name of Guyana.
Mel
