Subject: Nomination - Guyana Cultural Association/Folk Festival Award

Greetings:

I'd like to nominate Mr. John "Slingshot" DrePaul for the Guyana Cultural Association/Folk Festival Award. This man was orphaned as a child and once lived on the beach, relying on handouts to survive! Just look at him now! He is a wonderful writer, musician, entertainer and humanitarian. His lyrics are clean and positive. Slingshot and his wife Ingrid travel all over the world, spreading joy with their very cultural and patriotic music. Reminding us of the times, past and present, and giving us hope. Most importantly, he has never forgotten his people - Slingshot gives back so much to the Guyanese community without any prejudice. How many times I've looked at the news and seen his name either performing for the orphaned children at one of the many orphanages, or donating money from a fundraiser. If you look at his website you'll get an idea of the respect he has gained and the excellent work that he selflessly does http://www.tropicalwaves.net
Mr. John ":Slingshot" DrePaul would be an excellent choice for the Folk Festival Award - this hard working man is most deserving of it.

Sincerely
Nadia Zitman

I would like to nominate Paul DrePaul for the Guyana Cultural Association/Folk Festival Award. Mr. DrePaul's continued support to the children of the Orphanages in Guyana is quite admirable. He freely donates his time and talents to bring laughter and joy to the children that so desperately need it, and for this noble act, Mr. Drepaul is deserving of this award. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Maylene Santiago

Hi Sling: I was glad to remake your acquaintance at the Skeldon picnic and to talk about the old times when you were in the “Lonely Bulls”. Boy, does this bring back memories. You seem to have so much energy, it must be the way you think about life and I would encourage all people to think the same way, as you can tell I do the same. You must be pretty unencumbered in your mind and good human being thinking good about all in the same manner ( how about that for a little bit of psychology?). By the way I listened to your CD. Remember that I purchased 2? I think that is good reflection of most people and I loved it. A pity I could not team up to sing a little with you as I do some of that. Keep in contact especially when you go to Guyana […]
With regards,
Sheer Ramjohn
PS: Use the video you made of me for promotion.

Hello John,
In 1962 or 1963 I saw you at the Skeldon Junior Staff club, playing “Perfidia” (someone else’s music) on the guitar. On Sunday June 26th, 2005 I saw you again at the Guyana Trade Show in Toronto and what a difference. You performed alone but this time you were no longer the “Lonely Bull” but “Slingshot”, a one man band, playing and singing your own songs. You are not just a musician but a great entertainer.
Congratulations…!!!

Dr. Slingshot:
Wow!!!!!!!!! is all I can say after reading your profile
You are a scholar and a gentleman, a self-starter and self taught person who came from humble beginnings. We have much to learn from you.
I sincerely hope that all your friends and family will bestow the honor you so richly deserve when you render your beautiful music at the picnic. Our paths may never cross but I have the greatest respect for you.
With utmost certainty your book is going to be great and a tear-jerker as well. I would love to procure a copy when finished.
Only a week ago I read your email about teachers and a few sentences you said about yourself made me somewhat emotional. It was then that I saw greatness in you without knowing anything about your writing and artistic skills.
Sad to say that I am not up to date with Soca music. But I have had the pleasure of listening to some of it at friends' parties during a different phase of my life. This is all new and of the younger generation. It is absolutely beautiful -- music to set the feet a-dancing. Hurrah for you, and may God shower His blessings on you as you continue to hone your skills.
Best wishes
Farida

THE ORIGIN OF GUYANESE MUSIC.
[…]
CONCLUSION
There are some signs of recovery in local music, but most of Guyana’s music today is imported from other Caribbean islands such as Jamaica’s reggae and Trinidad’s soca.
Guyana’s Dave Martin, leader of the Trade Winds calypso band, has been around for more that three decades and continues to make remarkable musical contributions to the Caribbean.
Eddie Grant, a Guyanese music celebrity, recently remigrated to the region from London and set up his recording company, ICE Records , in Barbados.
And not to forget John "Slingshot" Drepaul who shows his love for Guyana in his songs and contributions to the art of music.

Hi John,
I've observed the group delving into and sometimes destroying "IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE...etc.....This has been and is your life line in a sad and sorry world...I dabble very lightly and cautiously in the music world....and with help from friends like yourself manage to sift through the debris and decay and come up smiling. Music has no boundaries, no limits, thus you and I can communicate at a level that defies logic and that delivers the supernatural into the natural & vice versa. I thoroughly enjoy this kind of "level talk"..."heart to heart"....
[…] when you start playing… then that's a different ball game... one is transported or catapulted into a different orbit […] Our youngsters don't know the kind of influence and legacy you left in Skeldon... […]Like a true teacher you have fired the shot that has "knowledge", "wisdom", "temperance" carved all over.. How quickly do we, Skeldonians, forget what has moulded and shaped the tenor and tone of our existence ... [ …] ... Thanks for the song list...I'll play around with the songs, in the mean time ... PLAY ON JOHN ... the "ONLY BULL" from the "LONELY BULLS"
Love ya and proud of your accomplishments...!!

How are you and the family doing?? Sorry we did not get to hook up as usual. Because this has been going on forever! We always seem to be sliding by each other and never bouncing up anyway maybe one day, we will all meet up hopefully God's willing. It's a pity things did not work out as planned (Mashramani in May). But these things happen. Do give my regards to the wife and daughter Annabelle. Do take care!
