MASH FEVER, Slingshot’s fifth
CD, centers on Guyana’s Mashramani carnival celebration. Among
the songs are “Mash Fever’, ‘Pirates’, ‘Dr. Slingshot’, ‘Tek
Ah Taste', 'Harry & Millie’, ‘My El Dorado Dream’, ‘Wake Up My
Guyana’, “Lazy Man’, ‘Golden Locket’,
and ‘A Very Merry Guyanese Christmas’.
‘Pirates’ brings to the open the unbridled piracy
of intellectual property and how rampant it is in especially
Guyana, where copyright laws are not properly enforced. ‘Dr.
Slingshot’ is a take on Guyana’s Michelle ‘Big Red’
King’s very popular 2004 song ‘Baacanal Fever’.
This composition also brings into play Cyd Hooper’s ‘Linkin’,
and Compton Hodge’s ‘Balloon’. ‘Wake Up My
Guyana’ was Slingshot’s 2004 Road March song. Its
patriotic message is very clear and the imagery superb. There is
a bonus selection added to the selection. “Tanzania”
is a rewritten song done especially for the African country of
Tanzania. The music was also redone completely. The CD ‘Mash
Fever’ brings together the celebration that is symbolic
with Mashramani.
All the songs are written, composed and
arranged by John and Ingrid DrePaul. Frankie McIntosh of St.
Vincent assists with the musical arrangement. Slingshot
participates regularly at the major West Indian Carnival
celebrations around the world. Check him out and support his
music.

REMEMBERING, Slingshot's first CD, cuts close to his
heart. The songs were written and selected for his late wife.
The title song, "Remembering" captures the feelings of lost
dreams and hopes. It is a "must listen" for anyone who has lost
a dear friend and companion. Hopefully, you can find solace in
the soothing rhythms, message and memories.

SWEET ISLAND WOMAN is Slingshot's second CD. It
is collection of fast-paced soca rhythms, soca-chutney
dance tunes, sensually tantalizing calypso lyrics, ragga/reggae
melodies, and dreamy tropical ballads. The songs are very
topical and cover all the major Carnival celebrations
around the world. For example, Labor Day Celebration in
Brooklyn, New York, and Toronto, Canada.

HOME SWEET HOME, his third CD, is a tribute to
Guyana, the birthplace of Slingshot. It truly captures the
spirit and joy of being a Guyanese. As he puts it, 'Home
Sweet Home' is dedicated to my Guyanese people everywhere!
Your praises I'll sing out
loud…!
And walk with my head high and proud…!
No matter where I may roam…!
You're my Home, Sweet Home…! |
The title song, 'Home Sweet Home', is a very stirring
and patriotic tune that Slingshot hopes will become a
standard among Guyanese everywhere.
'Christmas in Guyana' is a seasonal - and year-round -
''must play'! It reflects the love that all Guyanese in
the Diaspora - and at home - have for their country. The
lyrics and music bring out the Christmas feelings and
yearnings to be home in the motherland.
The compositions 'Why', 'There Was A Time', and 'It's
Not Too Late', deal with some regrettable social events
that have marred the almost utopian lifestyle that once
existed there.
'Berbice River Crossing' captures the ambience of the 'Torani'
that daily ferries passengers and vehicles across the
Berbice River. 'Beautiful Island Girl' is done in
Slingshot's inimitable singing style with its nostalgia
and soulful appeal. 'No. 63 Beach' is an instrumental,
beautifully done by Slingshot on guitar and Dani Donadi on
keyboard. The intertwining solos evoke memorable times
Slingshot spent at No. 63 Beach, Corentyne.

JUMP FOR CARNIVAL, Slingshot's fourth CD, has
all the wit, sensuality, double entendres, satire, and
dance party music that are part and parcel of West Indian
Calypsonians and their music. Carnival rhythms pervade
throughout the entire CD. Of much interest is the humorous
'tent' compositions 'Harry Ram', 'Energy Solution', and
'De Missin Pussy Cat'. The poignant 'Golden Locket' is a
'must listen'!
'Run! Just Run!' condemns terrorism everywhere. The
song pays tribute to the September 11, 2001 World Trade
Center tragedy, in New York City. Slingshot has dedicated
the song to the 23 Guyanese nationals, who perished in the
Twin Tower collapse.

| "THERE
WAS A TIME" is the apt title of Slingshot's
visually tantalizing and innovative DVD/VHS Video. This
semi-biographical work captures him performing some of his
music. Most of the filming was done in Guyana, Trinidad &
Tobago, and St Vincent. However, there are some still
photography and extracts from 'home movies' filmed in
China, Holland, Germany, Italy, France, UK, and USA. These
selective pieces capture the spirit of his career: the
hard times and the good times. Also, included in the work,
are some still photos of Slingshot, which interestingly
trace his life and musical career. |
